Storyteller Jesse Smith leads the Crossnore Jammers

The Crossnore Jam is in Crossnore Communities for Children (North Carolina), coming from a prominent local family with deep medical and educational roots in the mountain community.

Despite being legally blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa, he is a dedicated community leader, former town mayor, musician, and outdoor enthusiast.

Family and Community Roots

  • Medical Legacy:
His great-aunt and uncle (Dr. Henry and Mary Martin Sloop) founded the Crossnore School and brought early healthcare to the area, while his father, Dr. E. H. Smith, practiced medicine in Crossnore for over 54 years.
  • Local Service:
Jesse served the town as a council member and mayor.
Musical Leadership
  • The Crossnore Jam: He took over leading the monthly community jam sessions at the town's Meeting House after the previous leader moved away.
  • Open to All: The lively gatherings welcome anyone to bring an instrument or just listen and enjoy the fellowship.
